Goin’ to the chapel

Martha-Mary Chapel in Greenfield Village often first comes to mind when people think of or dream about weddings at The Henry Ford. It surely is one of the most popular and beloved buildings on our campus.

When my co-worker Angela Keller-Pelc and I were researching the chapel in the Benson Ford Research Center, we uncovered countless photographs of beautiful flowers, dresses and even carriage rides. We were astonished to learn that in June of 1941, there were five weddings scheduled for each Saturday that month. Back then, you needed Clara Ford’s approval to get married in the chapel.

We couldn’t help but think about the many people that started their married lives in that charming chapel. We had their names, but we found ourselves wondering about the life stories of all of those couples.

What brought them to the Martha-Mary Chapel back then? Did they attend school at the Edison Institute? Perhaps they worked for Ford Motor Company. We wondered if their children carried on the tradition and were married at the chapel also. Did they have grandchildren? Great-grandchildren?

Do you or does your family have a history with the Martha-Mary Chapel in Greenfield Village? We’d sure love to put some stories behind the names and know how this special building has touched your life. Please feel free to share below in the comment box or on our Facebook page.

This is the second in a series of three posts that will cover how some of our familiar (and maybe not-so-familiar) sites are transformed into wedding reception venues, and why couples choose to celebrate their marriages here, at America’s Greatest History Attraction.
