Celebrating love at Lovett Hall

Wedding -- beautifully decorated at Lovett Hall

This is the first in a series of three posts that will cover how some of our familiar (and maybe not-so-familiar) sites are transformed into wedding reception venues, and why couples choose to celebrate their marriages here, at America’s Greatest History Attraction.

There are many ways to experience The Henry Ford.

If you‘ve been following our events blog, you know that one unique way is with a private evening event. Last week we shared details of Emily and Ed’s marriage ceremony in Pennsylvania Courtyard and one-of-a-kind reception in Henry Ford Museum. Their wedding wishes and philosophy made The Henry Ford a perfect match.

One of the most reserved spots for celebrating a couple’s love at The Henry Ford is Lovett Hall.

This beautiful building, built by Henry Ford and opened in 1937, was the recreation building for the students of The Edison Institute. It nestled just between Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Lovett Hall had a dorm, a pool and gym, a library, classroom space and one seriously grand and gracious ballroom. In that ballroom, Henry Ford hosted dances for his friends, business associates and the students of The Edison Institute.

Like so much of The Henry Ford, Lovett Hall has an amazing history.

In October 1937, Miss Betty Hutchinson writes in The Edison Institute publication, The Herald, about a dance celebrating the opening of the Lovett Hall ballroom:

“Probably the most outstanding thing about this room is the beautiful floor.  It is teakwood which as been laid in the Fontainebleau pattern… It is hard to put the description of the ballroom into words. It is truly a room of exquisite beauty… During the evening, many pairs of eyes were fastened on the chandeliers. There is no wonder as they are wood polished crystal cut glass with a large percentage of lead, and were especially made in Czechoslovakia…The orchestra was situated in an alcove, especially designed for this purpose…”

What is truly amazing (and a credit to the facilities’ staff over the years) is that almost every major element of the building’s architecture and elegance remains intact and is carefully maintained to preserve its original beauty.

You may not know that Lovett Hall comes alive with weddings nearly every weekend of the year. The history and classic elegance draws visitors to the ballroom, an experience that begins the moment guests step into the marble lobby. There’s a formal library, an exquisite courtyard and our brick-paved Ginger Meyer Garden.

If Lovett Hall Ballroom could talk, it would speak of dance lessons, anniversary galas, high school proms, weddings, and even antique shows – all wonderful experiences that mark significant times in our guests’ lives.

What’s your history with Lovett Hall?

This Saturday, I will be tweeting some of the elements of a Lovett Hall Wedding.  I want to show off some of the signature items that this couple has chosen to personalize for their special day.  Follow me on Twitter @cmdodge!
