See the wheat harvest next week at Firestone Farm!

Gruber Hay Wagon

Next Tuesday and Wednesday, July 12-13, historic presenters at Firestone Farm will harvest their heirloom Turkey Red Winter Wheat, which will then be used by our talented cooks inside the Firestone home to prepare a hearty, traditional Threshermen’s Dinner.

During the harvest, you’ll be able to talk with our farmers working in the field and learn about our impressive horse-drawn Johnston Self-Raking Reaper, which has been polished, greased, received a new coat of linseed oil and is ready to go!

Then, watch as the Firestone Farm workers tie our wheat into sheaves by hand and stack them into stooks for drying.

Can’t make it next week? You might get a second chance to see our large Gruber hay wagon in action once again during Maker Faire Detroit weekend, July 30-31, as it brings the harvest into the barn to await threshing!

Ryan Spencer is manager of Firestone Farm in Greenfield Village. Working at The Henry Ford was a childhood dream of his – although he did not realize then that it would involve so much manure.
