Salt kiln firing at Greenfield Village’s Pottery Shop – part three (with video)

Finished pottery piece

A while back, we loaded up our salt kiln with handmade pottery pieces and began the firing. And now, we’ve finally come to the moment in this process we’ve all been waiting for – unloading the salt kiln!

After 10 days of cooling, our whole team at the Pottery Shop is pretty excited to see the results…and this firing didn’t disappoint!

Watch the final video of this labor of love to learn more about how the pottery ends up with all of those shade and texture variations – then stop by one of our stores at The Henry Ford (or shop online) and take home one of these salt-fired pottery pieces!

What is your favorite pottery piece from our collection, salt-fired or otherwise?

Ryan Forrey is lead potter in Greenfield Village’s Pottery Shop, where throwing pottery is a fun and rewarding job – but nothing like the movie Ghost.
