Salt kiln firing at Greenfield Village’s Pottery Shop – part one (with video)

Items going into the salt kiln for firing

The countdown to this season’s re-opening of Greenfield Village is on – only 11 days left!

It’s been a long winter, but just like with Firestone Farm, don’t think that the Pottery Shop has lay dormant these past few months. Quite the opposite – our pottery team has been hard at work on lots of different projects, many of which you can take home with you!

Just one example is our stoneware pottery, which includes our beloved Eagle Tavern collection (and of course, those fun face jugs!); these beautiful, golden-hued pieces are shaped, designed and then fired in a salt kiln right inside the Pottery Shop.

It’s a lengthy process, one that our guests don’t usually get to see – until now! (Don’t you love the wonders of technology?)

Over the next week and a half, I’ll take you through our most recent salt kiln firing in three videos: preparation, firing and then – at last – the final result.

So without further adieu, Part 1: Loading the Salt Kiln!

Ryan Forrey is lead potter in Greenfield Village’s Pottery Shop, where throwing pottery is a fun and rewarding job but nothing like the movie Ghost.
